Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is an upcoming 2027 American science-fiction monster film directed by Grant Sputore and written by David Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green, with visual effects by Kelly Port. Currently in production at Legendary Pictures, it will follow up Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) as the sixth film in the Monsterverse, and is also currently scheduled to be the sixth Hollywood-produced Godzilla film and 39th overall, as well as the 11th live-action King Kong film and 14th overall. Warner Bros. is set to release the film to American theaters on March 26, 2027.

Development

The possibility of a sixth Monsterverse film was first entertained by Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard while at the latter's red carpet premiere on March 25, 2024, telling Deadline that he would be open to returning as director: "I think the seductive thing as a filmmaker when you've done two movies is to complete it as this trilogy — that's always what everybody expects. We'll see. It really depends on how [The New Empire] does. I think that there's a lot of really cool ideas we have [about] where we would go with it. I'm open to it and excited for what the future brings."[1]

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR) published the next day, Wingard reiterated, "There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. [...] Obviously, I wouldn’t make this decision until we see how [The New Empire] performs at the box office, but I would definitely have some interest in doing another one of these. There’s a way to continue to innovate, and as a director, it would be exciting because I would take an even different approach next time."[2] Yet another interview was published by IGN on March 29, in which Wingard elaborated, "I definitely have some ideas of where [Godzilla's and Kong's stories] could go. In the way that Kong is treated in this movie [The New Empire], if this movie is successful, I think that the next movie will be the Godzilla version of what we did with this movie, kind of pushing deeper into his story."[3]

On April 8, THR published a quote from Legendary Pictures Chairman of Worldwide Production Mary Parent, who said of The New Empire's box office success, "This is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds."[4] By May 2, Legendary was reportedly eyeing Wingard to direct another Monsterverse film, but had yet to sign a deal with him, as he had already signed on to direct the movie Onslaught for A24.[5] Production of another Monsterverse installment was officially confirmed on May 10, when THR reported that Legendary had hired Godzilla (2014) storywriter David Callaham to develop a screenplay.[6] On May 21, the outlet reported that Wingard would not direct the film, due to scheduling conflicts with Onslaught. Wingard's departure was described as "amicable," with Legendary reportedly open to him returning in the future.[7]

On June 6, I Am Mother director Grant Sputore was announced to be directing the project.[8] On June 28, Warner Bros. announced that it will release the film in theaters on March 26, 2027.[9]

In a brief interview with Inverse published on August 6, Godzilla x Kong star Dan Stevens commented on the potential for his character to return in the sequel: "I think there's many more adventures that you could get out of him so we're just going to have to see. I know that they're currently just ideating the whole next thing, so we'll wait and see if Trapper makes a return or not".[10] In a statement to Screen Rant published on January 27, 2025, Stevens' Godzilla x Kong costar Rebecca Hall expressed skepticism that she would return: "Where am I going in the Monsterverse? Nowhere, apparently! No one's asked me, so I don't think I'm in the next one".[11]

A few days prior to Hall's interview, on January 24, Deadline reported that Kaitlyn Dever was in negotiations to join the film's cast. It elaborated that, according to insiders, "Legendary is looking to build on its human characters and the first logical choice landed on Dever." The article also revealed that the film will involve "several new human characters alongside Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat".[12] On January 31, THR broke news that Stevens had joined negotiations to return in the film.[13] Both actors' deals were finalized by February 19, when it was reported that Jack O'Connell had also joined the cast; he will play the brother of Dever's character.[14][15] On February 21, THR exclusively announced the addition of Delroy Lindo, who will play the boss of Dever's character at Monarch.[16] Matthew Modine joined on March 5, with the reported role of a military general.[17] Deadline exclusively announced Alycia Debnam-Carey's casting on April 9.[18] Sam Neill joined on April 15.[19]

On April 24, a report by IF Magazine revealed numerous key staff members including co-writer Michael Lloyd Green, VFX supervisor Kelly Port, and composer Henry Jackman.[20]

Production

At the red carpet premiere of The Last of Us season 2, Kaitlyn Dever confirmed principal photography had begun in Queensland, Australia by April 2, 2025.[21] A May shoot in Brisbane had the city standing in for London.[22] Filming is also expected to take place in Grand County, Utah, between July 21[23] and August 2.[24]
