— Handmaidens of Antra (Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #3) |
The Handmaidens of Antra are tiny twin priestesses of Antra who appear in the 2025 IDW Publishing comic Mothra: Queen of the Monsters.
Design
Similar to the unique designs boasted by the Shobijin in Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, the Handmaidens of Antra resemble miniature humans with white, pupil-less eyes and antenna jutting out of their foreheads. Unlike the Shobijin, they possess completely white skin contrasted by a black, web-like substance that serves as dresses for the pair that also covers their hands (which are also long and claw-like), arms, feet, and the upper half of their faces. Additionally, they have long, wavy, vibrant pink hair.
Personality
Much like the Shobijin, the Handmaidens of Antra are concerned with maintaining the natural order, though their disharmony with one another resulted in their failure to properly communicate with and comfort Antra and caused her to go rogue out of fear. The fairies were clearly distraught over this, insisting that they shouldered the blame for Mothra's demise and that they had failed Antra, defending the ant kaiju to Emi and Mira. They are shown to be kind and cooperative, helping the Shobijin after they fell ill and hearing out Emi and Mira's suggestion of using Antra to help train Mothra Gemini.
History
- Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1, 3-4 (2025)
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1
The Handmaidens of Antra met with the Shobijin shortly after Emi and Mira had been sent through time to the past on a mission to reverse the damage caused by Antra by locating a new Mothra egg.
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #3
After accidentally arriving in an apocalyptic future ravaged by Ghidorahs unopposed by all but MechaMothra due to their disharmony, Emi, Mira, and Mothra Gemini were guided to Mothra's temple by ghostly apparitions of the Shobijin, where they found the Handmaidens of Antra gravely ill. The Shobijin explained that Antra had perished years prior in this future, and without her, the Handmaidens were slowly dying as a result. The Handmaidens then revealed they were responsible for Antra going rogue, explaining that Antra was created by the Earth to protect the planet from the eventual arrival of Megaguirus. However, they were unable to properly communicate with her or each other and failed to properly comfort her ahead of this task, causing her to lash out against Mothra in fear against the Handmaidens' wishes, which Emi and Mira were able to relate to. The Shobijin then assisted Emi and Mira in returning to their own time period, where they were greeted by healthy versions of the Handmaidens of Antra tending to the Shobijin, who assured the twins that they would recover once Mothra was reborn. The Handmaidens continued tending to the Shobijin as Emi and Mira created a song to help aid Mothra Gemini's metamorphosis. After witnessing Mothra Gemini emerge from her cocoon, Emi and Mira spoke with the Handmaidens and requested that they summon Antra, much to their concern as they worried Antra would attack them. However, the twins believed that Antra would make for a perfect sparring partner to help Mothra Gemini train.
Abilities
Telepathy
The Handmaidens of Antra are connected to Antra as the Shobijin are to Mothra, capable of telepathically calling her to a location if they so wish.
Weaknessess
In the event of Antra's demise, the Handmaidens of Antra will grow weak and eventually perish themselves.
Trivia
- The Handmaidens of Antra are the first pair of miniature twin priestesses to serve a kaiju who is not a Mothra. Battra had previously received a pair of twin human priestesses in the form of Minette and Mallory in the comic series Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, and later received a single miniature priestess with Luluvera in the web series Godziban, though the Handmaidens of Antra act as a much more direct parallel to the Shobijin on account of being both miniature fairy-like beings and twins.
