Mothra Gemini
|
Mothra Gemini is a giant divine moth kaiju who appears in the 2025 IDW Publishing comic Mothra: Queen of the Monsters. Following the death of Mothra, a pair of psychic twins traveled back in time at behest of the Shobijin and located Mothra Gemini's egg with the hopes of changing history and preventing the Earth's dark future.
Name
Mothra Gemini was not named in the press release for the series announcement; co-creator Matt Frank first revealed her name on X (formerly Twitter) the day after the comic series was first announced.[1]
Development
In an interview, Sophie Campbell revealed that Mothra Gemini's design originated from a previous pitch for a Godzilla project that was ultimately shelved several years before the development of Mothra: Queen of the Monsters. Once the new series was greenlit, both Campbell and Matt Frank contributed to the design process by building off of Campbell's original sketch. Mothra Gemini's larval form was originally meant to resemble a traditional brown Mothra larva, though the design underwent various changes during development. A fluffy larva similar to Mothra Gemini's imago design was considered, and the creative duo ultimately settled upon incorporating aposematism with the larva's bright colors being meant to deter predators.[2]
Design
Mothra Gemini's imago form closely resembles various past incarnations of Mothra while incorporating various elements of Mothra Leo, the son of Mothra featured in the Rebirth of Mothra film trilogy. Like most versions of Mothra, Mothra Gemini features a body of white, black, and orange fur alongside wings of red, orange, yellow, and black. Mothra Gemini's body, head, and arms are covered in a thick fur, giving her a noticeably fluffier appearance than most versions of Mothra. The fur on the edges of her wings sport a unique stripped pattern of yellow and black while her wing patterns also differ from typical Mothra incarnations, featuring zigzag-like lines and swirls. Her feather-like antennae are also nearly identical to those of Mothra Leo, and her eyes are similarly oval-shaped.
Mothra Gemini's larval form, meanwhile, differs dramatically from previous depictions of Mothra's larvae. Her skin is a vibrant yellow with orange splotches and a white underbelly. Her eyes are large and black, and she uniquely sports antennae. Her legs are additionally more pronounced than other depictions of the character.
Origins
Twins Emi and Mira were tasked with locating the egg in prehistoric times by the Shobijin. After traveling back in time, the duo were found by the Shobijin of that time period and were brought to a temple where Mothra Gemini's egg lied before they attempted to bring it back to the present.

Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #2
Following the death of Mothra at the hands of Antra and subsequent collapse of civilization, the Shobijin tasked twin sisters Emi and Mira with traveling back in time to locate an ancient Mothra egg that they were to bring back to the present. While the twins successfully performed the ritual for travel and located the ancient Mothra egg, they botched the ritual to return to the present, accidentally returning some fifteen years before they left to the day of Mothra's demise while also unwittingly allowing Megaguirus and a swarm of Meganula to pursue them through the portal.
As the original Mothra engaged the Dragon Queen, Mothra Gemini hatched from her egg, much to Emi's joy. The newborn Mothra Gemini wasted no time in staving off the swarming Meganula, trapping several in silk to protect the twins. Emi pleaded for the original Mothra to continue the fight while Mothra Gemini approached the weakened divine moth. After Antra appeared and forced Megaguirus to retreat, the ant kaiju turned her attention to the dying Mothra, who rose to the challenge with what little strength she had left and fought Antra off as Mothra Gemini shielded Emi and Mira from falling debris. Antra soon struck the death blow to Mothra, at which point the enraged Mothra Gemini engaged the ant kaiju, webbing her feet to the ground while swatting a car into her ant drones to keep them at bay. Unfortunately, Antra noticed the tiny larva's presence and grabbed her in her mandibles. As Mothra Gemini struggled to break free, Emi and Mira beckoned her to join them in retreat. Hearing the twins' call, Mothra Gemini spat silk directly into Antra's eye, causing the ant monster to drop her as Mothra Gemini made her escape.
Upon reaching a safe distance away from the city, Mothra Gemini and the twins witnessed Megaguirus departing. Emi and Mira vowed to train their own Mothra to rise to the challenge.
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #3
As part of their training regime, Emi and Mira constructed a Megaguirus scarecrow on a farm for Mothra Gemini to destroy with her silk attack, though Mira questioned the effectiveness and argued that they needed to wait until she changed. Mothra Gemini subsequently noticed Megaguirus and her swarm approaching from the distance and alerted the twins, resulting in the trio fleeing to a barn to hide. As Megaguirus closed in, the twins decided to perform the Haora Mothra ritual in another attempt to return to their correct time period, only to find themselves in an apocalyptic future in which they witnessed MechaMothra desperately defending the planet from an army of Ghidorahs. Ghostly apparitions of the Shobijin appeared and led the trio to the safety of their temple, where they found the Handmaidens of Antra dying and learned that Antra had only attacked Mothra due to their failure to comfort and communicate with her, causing Antra to lash out and go rogue in fear. The Shobijin then helped the twins and Mothra Gemini return to their proper time period. Mothra Gemini proceeded to spin a cocoon for herself to metamorphosis, though Emi and Mira were concerned about how long it would take her to transform. The duo ultimately decided to create a new song for Mothra Gemini that would help speed up the process.
Some time later, the song proved effective as Mothra Gemini emerged from her cocoon in imago form and joyously reunited with Emi and Mira. The twins then spoke with the Shobijin and the Handmaidens of Antra concerning a recent plan they devised to pit Mothra Gemini against Antra to help her train.

Durability
As the original Mothra battled Antra, Mothra Gemini shielded Emi and Mira from falling debris and was unscathed.
Physical abilities
Mothra Gemini's larval form swatted cars into Antra's ant drones using her tail with swift precision.

Trivia
- Mothra Gemini bears a few similarities to the Mothra redesign featured in the previous IDW Publishing comics Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors and Godzilla: Monsters & Protectors - Summer Smash, where she was also depicted with a particularly fluffy body.
- The concept a new imago Mothra succeeding an elder Mothra that dies at the hands of an enemy kaiju is highly reminiscent of Mothra Leo from the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy. Additionally, both Mothra Leo and Mothra Gemini have zodiac-based names, along with feathery antennae, and time travel between the present and the Mesozoic Era to fight another kaiju.
