Apeman
|
The apeman is an ape-like humanoid that serves as an antagonist in the 1925 film The Lost World.
Design
True to his name, the apeman has a humanoid build with short, dark hair covering much of his body except his face, feet and hands. His face is simian with some human traits, such as a smaller snout and a pronounced downward-facing nose, but also fang-like incisors in his mouth. He has sagging skin under his eyes, which have white sclera and dark pupils.
Personality
The apeman displayed hostility towards Professor Challenger's party from the start, causing trouble or harm to them throughout their expedition to and on the plateau. He often had a wicked smile or drooled when antagonizing the people, showing he took pleasure in his actions. His desire to cause them trouble ran so deeply that he followed them across the plateau for one year, and even attempted to harm them while a volcano was erupting. He is, however, much more friendly towards the chimpanzee who accompanies him.

The Lost World
The apeman was first shown alongside a chimpanzee observing Professor Challenger and his party. Soon after, he rolled a boulder down towards the group's camp from atop the plateau. Afterwards, the apeman would continue to stalk the party across the plateau.
Shortly after the party successfully drove an Allosaurus from their camp, the apeman came to menace them again, watching them from up in a tree branch. As Ed Malone climbed the tree to find a safer place to set camp, the apeman crept across the tree towards him. Before the apeman could attack Malone, however, Sir John Roxton shot him down from the tree, forcing him to retreat up a grassy hill.
Sometime after, the apeman and chimp had followed the party to a cave that Professor Challenger's party would escape the plateau through. As the party attempted to escape the plateau as a volcano was erupting, the apeman attacked one last time, pulling up the rope ladder as Malone attempted to climb down from the plateau. However, Roxton shot the apeman in the chest, killing him once and for all while ensuring that Malone could safely join the party at the plateau's base.
Abilities
Physical abilities
The apeman was capable of limited tool use, such as using a boulder to try and harm Professor Challenger's group. He is shown to be an adept climber, as he hid in a tree during one of his attempts to antagonize the group at their camp. He also demonstrated fairly impressive strength, being able to effortlessly pull Ed Malone up with the rope ladder.
Weaknesses
The apeman was susceptible to gunfire, which ultimately led to his death.
