― Chibi Gigan arguing with Chibi Mechagodzilla (Chibi Godzilla Raids Again episode 40, "Robot Monster Invasion")

Chibi Gigan (ちびガイガン,   Chibi Gaigan) is a juvenile kaiju who appears in the second season of the 2023 animated television series Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. A robot monster, Chibi Gigan is a villainous character who plots to take over Monster Island and replace its inhabitants with robots, though these efforts always fail due to both his complete inability to argue his views and his inexplicable love of nature; he ultimately becomes a regular inhabitant of the island.

Name

Chibi Gigan's name simply comes from placing chibi (ちび), a Japanese word meaning "little," before "Gigan".

Design

Chibi Gigan greatly resembles the Showa Gigan, but rounder and simplified, lacking the latter's forehead laser, buzzsaw, tail spike, and central sail. His body is blue and yellow with a red visor and grey claws with a grey beak. His claws and spikes are also shorter, less sharp, and more curved than those of the Showa Gigan's.

Personality

Chibi Gigan serves as the "villain" of the series and can be rude and confrontational, especially towards organic monsters, who he views as "inferior." He holds Chibi Mechagodzilla in high regards and frequently tries to persuade the robot to join him in conquering Monster Island. Chibi Gigan's most prominent trait is his inability to argue against differing opinions, often finding himself instantly agreeing with his opponent.

Chibi Gigan does possess a softer and less confrontational side which becomes more apparent over time. Despite being a robot, he is an environmentalist with a love of the natural world and is also a "Hot Spring Observer Enthusiast". His love of nature frequently causes him to delay, forget, or abandon his plans to take over the island. He gradually becomes more like the other eccentric inhabitants of Monster Island over time, choosing to live on the island and becoming more polite to its inhabitants, though he still occasionally attempts to hatch evil plots, all of which are easily thwarted due to his complete lack of debating skill.

Origins

Chibi Gigan's origins are not explored outside of him being a robot monster who desires to take over Monster Island and replace all its inhabitants with other robots; it is unknown if he was created by humans like his fellow robot Chibi Mechagodzilla was. How he managed to come to Monster Island without losing his memory like Chibi Mechagodzilla is also unknown, since he states that water causes him to malfunction.

Chibi Godzilla Raids Again

"Robot Monster Invasion"

Just as Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Mothra were discussing Chibi Mechagodzilla's memory loss with him and wished there was another robot monster who could explain the situation, Chibi Gigan suddenly appeared before them, exclaiming that he finally found Chibi Mechagodzilla. He asked Chibi Mechagodzilla if he remembered him, introducing himself as Chibi Gigan. Chibi Godzilla enthusiastically asked if Chibi Gigan was a friend of Chibi Mechagodzilla's but all three were stunned by Chibi Gigan's rude response in which he described Chibi Godzilla as an "inferior monster" and dismissed him entirely. Chibi Mechagodzilla attempted to argue back to him by insisting Chibi Godzilla was his friend, but Chibi Gigan revealed that both of them were sent to destroy Monster Island, shocking all three of them. Chibi Gigan continued that they were sent to replace all the other monsters with robots before concluding that Chibi Mechagodzilla had clearly suffered a malfunction that caused memory loss. Chibi Godzilla stated that Chibi Gigan must be insane as Chibi Gigan asked Chibi Mechagodzilla to join him in his mission. Chibi Mechagodzilla refused and argued with Chibi Gigan, an argument easily won by Chibi Mechagodzilla due to Chibi Gigan's poor arguing skills as Chibi Mechagodzilla argued no one had any right to tell him how to live his life. Chibi Gigan attempted a compromise in which Chibi Mechagodzilla would only partially join in with destroying the island, though Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Mothra pointed out that this was a stupid idea. Having run out of arguments, Chibi Gigan left while announcing he hadn't given up, leaving the three to discuss what had just happened.

"Chibi Gigan Loves Nature"

Chibi Gigan was fishing at a river while admiring the natural world when Chibi Godzilla, Chibi Mechagodzilla, and Chibi Minilla arrived to confront him, being surprised when they found him relaxing. Chibi Godzilla asked him to behave like a villain so they could treat him like one and asked him if he was still planning to destroy the island - a mission he had, in truth, forgot about. Chibi Gigan unconvincingly attempted to tell them that he still planned to destroy the island, but quickly admitted that he had developed a liking for the place and its natural beauty. Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla talked to him about how this was somewhat strange since he is a robot and Chibi Godzilla asked what was so special about the nature on the island. Chibi Gigan told him about the quality of the water and the air though Chibi Godzilla assumed it wasn't unique to the island and complained about the island's abundance of swamps, lack of grocery selection, fat rats, and stinky logs. Chibi Gigan was angered by this and the two argued to the point where the tables turned and Chibi Godzilla announced he was going to destroy the island, confusing Chibi Mechagodzilla. Chibi Gigan stated that he was planning on staying on the island, but Chibi Minilla pointed out it was contradictory for him to destroy the island he was fond of. Chibi Gigan dismissed her opinion until he quickly realized it was valid.

A bird then landed on Chibi Gigan's shoulder, at which point he equipped a birdcage attachment in place of one of his arms. Chibi Mechagodzilla called this a weird attachment and Chibi Gigan decided to show off the various possible "weapon attachments" he had such as a light, bottle opener, and hot sandwich maker, describing them as essentials for camping rather than combat. Chibi Gigan expressed his desire for a camping spot before suddenly remembering that he was meant to take over the island and Chibi Mechagodzilla. Chibi Mechagodzilla announced he would never be taken over by Chibi Gigan, with Chibi Gigan responding by attaching a double-pronged chainsaw to his arm and saying they would have to do things the hard way. The group initially worried until it became apparent he just wanted to build a wood cabin so he could admire nature.

"Monster Party Games"

Chibi Godzilla invited Chibi Gigan to play a game called "King of the Monsters" in which players drew chopsticks to determine who would be king, and all other players had to do anything the king said. Chibi Gigan did not understand the premise of the game, but played along anyways and won the very first round. Despite Chibi Mechagodzilla's concerns, Chibi Gigan merely ordered the others to respect the environment.

"Chibi Gigan's Perfect Home"

Having decided to stay on the island, Chibi Gigan visited a real estate agency and met with Chibi Gabara to rent a room. Chibi Gigan explained that he wanted to be surrounded by nature, prompting Chibi Gabara to recommend an empty, open field, much to his excitement. Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla then arrived and attempted to stop Chibi Gigan, though Chibi Godzilla was more concerned with making sure Chibi Gigan picked the right home instead of stopping him from staying on the island entirely. Chibi Gabara agreed and got serious as he asked Chibi Gigan if he wanted his house to have a front door; Chibi Gigan angrily dismissed this as a ridiculous question until Chibi Gabara pointed out that flying monsters could enter their houses via balconies, prompting Chibi Gigan to apologize before Chibi Godzilla convinced him that he needed a front door after all. Chibi Gabara presented Chibi Gigan with a floorplan of a house with multiple front doors, and though Chibi Gigan was ready to take it, Chibi Godzilla convinced him not to. Chibi Gabara proceeded to share additional floorplans of improbable house layouts, including one located within a pond, though Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla's objections dissuaded Chibi Gigan from taking any. Chibi Gabara then recommended a vacant lot owned by "another evil organization". Chibi Gigan once again declared his intent to take it, but Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla later discovered that he had taken the very first space suggested by Chibi Gabara and set up a tent in the open field.

"Chibi Minilla Gets Kidnapped"

Chibi Gigan phoned Chibi Godzilla to tell him that he had kidnapped Chibi Minilla, demanding that he bring Chibi Mechagodzilla by noon in exchange. Chibi Minilla called him cowardly and inhumane, to which Chibi Gigan stated that he is the bad guy before admitting that he may have crossed a line and apologized, promising a "comfortable" hostage exchange. Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Mechagodzilla finally arrived the next day and were told off by Chibi Gigan for being late, though Chibi Godzilla explained that Chibi Gigan's message went straight to his voicemail and he didn't notice. Chibi Minilla described her experience as a hostage under Chibi Gigan to Chibi Godzilla: she had three meals a day, a bath, and even story time. Chibi Gigan then demanded they hand Chibi Mechagodzilla over if they wanted Chibi Minilla back, though both of them argued that he should stop this since Chibi Minilla was too young to be involved in such an affair, which Chibi Gigan agreed with in another argument easily won by his opponents as he handed her over. Chibi Gigan again asked for Chibi Mechagodzilla since he handed Chibi Minilla back, which Chibi Mechagodzilla refused to agree to until Chibi Godzilla abruptly accepted. However, Chibi Godzilla said they wouldn't hand him over for nothing and demanded something they wanted, with Chibi Gigan asking if he meant money. Chibi Godzilla stated he felt bad asking but Chibi Gigan offered it first before Chibi Gigan offered increasingly high amounts, shocking Chibi Godzilla, who believed he was offering too much.

Chibi Godzilla then stated that to hand Chibi Mechagodzilla over, Chibi Gigan had to say something funny. Chibi Gigan attempted a pun on Gigan's name, which Chibi Godzilla pretended to laugh at to make Chibi Gigan feel better. Chibi Godzilla then changed his mind and said they would hand Chibi Mechagodzilla over if Chibi Gigan handed Chibi Gigan over, which was accepted and led to Chibi Mechagodzilla being on his own as Chibi Gigan joined Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla. Chibi Gigan and Chibi Godzilla then told Chibi Mechagodzilla he was not to destroy Monster Island, with him angrily responding that he was not the delusional one of the lot.

"Dream Hot Spring"

Chibi Gigan was elated to discover an isolated hot spring on Monster Island, but just as he declared it his secret haven, he found Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Rodan already sitting in it, who were indifferent towards it. Annoyed that inferior beings had tainted his hot spring, he detailed the health benefits, though failed to influence their opinions. After Chibi Godzilla asked him why he didn't join them, Chibi Gigan explained that, as a robot monster, he would malfunction if he entered the water and described himself as a "Hot Spring Observer Enthusiast". Chibi Hedorah then appeared and attempted to enter the hot spring, only for Chibi Gigan to vehemently object out of fear that the monster's sludge would contaminate "his" hot spring, though Chibi Hedorah argued it belonged to no one and entered anyway. Chibi Gigan sobbed in despair as Chibi Hedorah was transformed into his clean form, causing him to passive-aggressively tell Chibi Gigan off for calling his sludge nasty and blaming him for making the water murky. Chibi Gigan then admitted he was wrong and crossed a line, prompting Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Rodan to berate him for being such a pushover.

"First Date Butterflies"

While hanging out with Chibi Mechagodzilla, Chibi Mothra explained that she invited him out because she thought he might still be upset due to Chibi Gigan revealing his past, with a flashback showing Chibi Gigan doing this.

"Chibi Minilla Runs Away"

After both Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla ran away from home (where they are the only two inhabitants), Chibi Godzilla was seen explaining what had happened to Chibi Gigan at his tent. Just as Chibi Gigan was about to ask Chibi Godzilla why he had chosen to stay with him, Chibi Minilla arrived and was about to request she stay before noticing Chibi Godzilla smugly relaxing in Chibi Gigan's deckchair, though Chibi Gigan pointed it was his home not Chibi Godzilla's. Chibi Minilla quickly left while Chibi Gigan angrily told Chibi Godzilla to go home after he asked the robot for a second drink.

Abilities

Limb replacement

While Chibi Gigan usually has metal hooks for hands, he can swap these out in favor of other items. In the episode "Chibi Gigan Loves Nature", Chibi Gigan temporarily swapped out one of his metal hooks with a fishing rod. He was also shown replacing one of his claws with a double-pronged chainsaw, similar that of Modified Gigan's. Other attachments include a birdcage, a flashlight, a bottle opener, and a hot sandwich maker, among others.

Weaknesses

Chibi Gigan states that he cannot enter water as it would cause him to malfunction, a weakness shared with fellow robot monster Chibi Mechagodzilla.

Trivia

  • Chibi Gigan is not the first character inspired by Gigan to lack the cyborg's distinctive buzzsaw, as Gigan Rex also lacks one.
