Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #2 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on April 16, 2025.[1]

Description

Mothra! The Queen of the Monsters! Rival to Godzilla! Protector of Earth! Dead!
Wait… dead? That’s right! The Queen of the Monsters is currently no more… that is, at least not in this time period! But with the power of the Shobijin, our recently reunited twins can travel back in time to the Jurassic Period and find a baby Mothra they can raise to save the day! It’s a simple plan, really.

Plot

Emi and Mira flee from an Anguirus until the ankylosaur is intercepted by a Gorosaurus. Before they can catch their breaths, a Meganulon threatens them, only to be webbed up by a Primitive Mothra. The kaiju is accompanied by prehistoric Shobijin, who are already aware that the twins have come for Mothra's egg. They lead them to a temple where the egg is hid from the Dragon Queen, Megaguirus. Outside, the dragonfly monster makes her presence known, latching onto the Gorosaurus and draining it of energy with her stinger. The Shobijin hurry Emi and Mira to the egg, as Megaguirus will soon detect their life forces, and tell them to perform the Haora Mothra ritual to bring themselves and the egg back to their own time. They note that the humans are in disharmony, which could jeopardize the ritual song, but they resolve to try anyway. Their song generated black-and-green energy, alarming Emi and drawing Megaguirus. As Emi, Mira, and the egg enter the portal, the Dragon Queen follows with numerous Meganula. As they vanish, the prehistoric Shobijin state that their own part in "this terrible task" is over.

Emi and Mira find themselves in a thriving city and immediately realize the ritual has gone wrong. Megaguirus and her swarm soon darken the skies overhead, only to be opposed by Mothra. As the two insect kaiju clash, the egg hatches. The newborn Mothra Gemini immediately enters the fight, restraining several Meganula with her webbing. However, the twins observe that other Meganula have their stingers in Mothra, draining her of magical energy. Megaguirus, however, is distracted by the arrival of Antra and her drones. Emi runs to the fallen Mothra and pleads with her to rejoin the fight as she locks eyes with Mothra Gemini. At the same time, Mira watches the modern Shobijin lead away a girl who looks like a younger Emi.

Antra overpowers Megaguirus, the Dragon Queen beating a hasty retreat with her swarm, and turns her attention to Mothra. As Mothra Gemini shields them from falling rubble, Mira tells Emi what she saw. Recalling that Meganulon were already in the city before they traveled through time, Mira concludes they are in a time loop—and they're responsible for the Meganula weakening Mothra and preventing her from laying an egg before she faced Antra. Mira reveals that the priestesses already told her about the time loop, though not their roles in Mothra's demise; Emi is furious, saying she never would have agreed to the mission had she known the truth. As they argue, Antra again finishes off Mothra, then slams down a limb in front of Mothra Gemini. The larva fights back, knocking a car into a drone and continuing to web up Antra's limbs, but the larger kaiju soon seizes her in her jaws. Inspiration by Mothra Gemini's tenacity, Mira encourages Emi to help her put things right. They call to the larva, who sprays webbing directly into Antra's eye, causing her to drop her. Emi and Mira leave the city with the exhausted larva and witness the Meganula delivering's Mothra's energy to Megaguirus. They resolve to train Mothra Gemini all the harder to face this new threat.

Trivia

  • This issue marks the first appearance of Primitive Mothra in an American comic; she is also the first character originating from the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy to appear in an American comic.
  • When Megaguirus first appears in the comic, she sports a new design, bearing more similarities to a large Meganula than usual. Her skin is primarily brown or orange, she possesses four dragonfly-like wings, and her mouth is more insectoid with mandibles. After absorbing Gorosaurus's energy, she molts her skin and takes on a much more familiar appearance, likely suggesting that she gained some of these attributes (darker skin, teeth) from Gorosaurus.
  • This issue was released on the same day as Marvel Comics' Godzilla vs. Hulk.
