Primitive Mothra
|
The Primitive Mothras (原始モスラ are Genshi Mosura)Cretaceous divine moth kaiju created by Toho that first appeared in the 1998 Toho film Rebirth of Mothra 3.
Name
While most publications refer to the creatures as simply Primitive Mothra, Rebirth of Mothra 3 Super Complete Works specifies them as Primitive Mothra Larva (原始モスラ幼虫. Genshi Mosura Yōchū)[2]
Design
Although their imago form is never seen, the Primitive Mothras resemble most other examples of Mothra larvae. However, their skin is green and much thicker than modern Mothra larvae and is adorned with what seems to be armored plating. Unlike modern Mothras, the eyes of the Primitive Mothras do not glow, but are still blue in color.
Personality
In Rebirth of Mothra 3, the Primitive Mothra are shown to be gentle and caring creatures, who were able to sense the mortal peril Rainbow Mothra was in. They proceeded to seal him in their silk in order to preserve the dying moth, allowing him to survive into the present.
In Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, a Primitive Mothra ensnares a Meganulon in silk, saving Emi and Mira. This individual is rather docile, guiding the two humans into the primitive temple towards Mothra Gemini's egg.

Heisei era
Rebirth of Mothra 3
Three Primitive Mothras first appeared after Rainbow Mothra killed Cretaceous Ghidorah. After diving into Mount Fuji, Rainbow Mothra was on the brink of death, and the three formed a cocoon around him, sealing him for millions of years so he could heal from his injuries. Regenerating from a tail severed during their battle, King Ghidorah reappeared to menace modern Japan, but Rainbow Mothra emerged from his cocoon as the powerful Armor Mothra and destroyed him.
Abilities
Speed
The Primitive Mothra larvae can travel on land at a maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour, equivalent to that of Mothra Leo.[2]
Silk
Like all Mothra larvae, the Primitive Mothras are able to spray silk webbing from their mouths. Some sources utilize the name Excel Strings (エクセル・ストリングス) for the webbing, the same as the larval Mothra Leo's in the first Rebirth of Mothra.[5] Unlike Leo's, these strings had no rainbow aftershock.
In Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, a Primitive Mothra fully restrained a Meganulon by covering it in silk, saving Emi and Mira.

Outrageous Flying Mothra!

Mothra Leo traveled back in time to defeat King Ghidorah, though he was still beaten by the three-headed dragon in prehistoric times. After King Ghidorah was chased away by a Tyrannosaurus rex, Primitive Mothra appeared before Mothra Leo and his allies, stating that Mothra had no hope of beating King Ghidorah in his current form. Primitive Mothra showed Mothra a technique to transform into Armor Mothra, though because the process took millions of years, Mothra's human ally Shota protested that they could not wait that long. Primitive Mothra complied and sped up the process by shaking Mothra's cocoon, allowing Armor Mothra to emerge mere minutes later. However, the armor proved too heavy for Mothra and prevented him from flying, so he ultimately decided to discard it. King Ghidorah then accidentally walked in on Mothra while he was changing, causing the flustered Mothra to knock King Ghidorah out with one punch. With King Ghidorah defeated, Mothra and his allies returned to the present.
Mothra: Queen of the Monsters

After having traveled back in time to locate a Mothra egg, twins Emi and Mira encountered various dinosaurs and kaiju, including Anguirus and Gorosaurus. Before they could be ambushed by a Meganulon, they were suddenly saved by a pair of prehistoric Shobijin atop a Primitive Mothra, who used her silk to stop the Meganulon. Aware of Emi and Mira's mission, the Shobijin invited the twins to follow Primitive Mothra to their temple, hidden away in a cave. From atop Primitive Mothra, the Shobijin warned the duo of the dangerous "Dragon Queen" before dismounting Primitive Mothra to enter the temple.
