Archaeopteryx (TBA) is a species of avian theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Period. The creature has become a pop culture icon, including influencing various concepts throughout the history of kaiju media.
Name
Archaeopteryx's name comes from the Greek words "ἀρχαῖος" (archaîos), which means "ancient", and "πτέρυξ" (ptéryx), which means "wing" or "feather". It has also been referred to by its German name "Urvogel", which means "primeval bird".

- A giant Archaeopteryx was supposed to appear in the scrapped 1956 film Bride of Godzilla?, which would have lived in a Hollow Earth teeming with other monsters, all of which would have been killed by the titular Bride of Godzilla in order to gain his favor.
- Due to being adapted from the unmade giant Archaeopteryx, Rodan's original concept art heavily resembled contemporary depictions of the animal, including a long tail and a full coat of feathers.
- Archaeopteryx was among the creatures slated to appear in Universal's 1976 remake of the original King Kong film, The Legend of King Kong, before the project was cancelled.
- Archaeopteryx was one of several different prehistoric creatures considered to be featured in the 1977 movie Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds before Rhamphorhynchus and Plesiosaurus were selected.
- One concept for Gigamoth heavily resembles both the original giant Archaeopteryx and feathered Rodan concept arts, to the point of having been nicknamed "Archaeopteryx" by some Godzilla fans.
- A 2013 draft for Shin Godzilla featured Godzilla evolving into an Archaeopteryx-like form capable of flight, identified by the archaic name Urvogel.[1]
- An animal almost identical to the Archaeopteryx-like Rodan concept art appears in a panel in first issue of Mothra: Queen of the Monsters.
