Anguirus (アンギラス,   Angirasu) is a species of giant Ankylosaurus-like kaiju who appears in the continuity of the GODZILLA anime trilogy. Though their only presence in the films is a skull in GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters, the prequel novel GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse features three individuals who menace Asia, Africa, and North America, but are all killed by various means.

Name

Main article: Anguirus#Name.

Anguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス), comes from the Japanese spelling of the name of the dinosaur genus Ankylosaurus (アンキロサウルス,   Ankirosaurusu), upon which the monster's design is based. The name was chosen from several names proposed by employees of Toho during production of Godzilla Raids Again.

Design

What little can be seen of Anguirus I's skull in the opening prologue of GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters shows a reptilian skull with an elongated snout full of sharp teeth. Strangely, the skull does not appear to have any of the traditional protrusions seen in other incarnations as well as fangs. Whether Anguirus I possessed such features prior to being killed by Hedorah or simply lacked them altogether is unknown.

Little else is known about the appearance of the Anguirus species outside of it being quadrupedal and the presence of a protective carapace on the back, the latter seen on Anguirus IV. Both traits adhere to the traditional Anguirus design.

Origins

At least four members of the Anguirus species emerged in the first half of the 21st century to menace or roam amongst humanity when enormous monsters suddenly appeared around the world. The first, Anguirus I, emerged from Siberia in 2005 and was killed in Beijing alongside Rodan I by Hedorah. The second, Anguirus II, appeared in South Africa in 2006, nothing else about the monster being acknowledged. Nothing is known about the third seen individual, who was presumably dubbed Anguirus III. The fourth, Anguirus IV, emerged from the Pacific Ocean into Los Angeles in 2030 along with Baragon II and Varan II. The trio had arrived in the city to flee from Godzilla, who nonetheless killed all three monsters with his atomic breath. Following the gruesome incident, no other members of the Anguirus species had been seen.

History

Reiwa era

GODZILLA: Planet of the Monsters

During the opening prologue of the film narrated by Haruo Sakaki, a news report showcased the skull of Anguirus I alongside Rodan I's skeleton at the Great Wall of China, where the two monsters were killed by a living bioweapon dubbed "Hedorah." The details behind the event go unaddressed aside from this.

Abilities

Carapace

Anguirus IV was mentioned to have a carapace on its back, which had been partially destroyed by Godzilla. Had it ever served an offensive purpose is unknown.

Amphibiousness

The Anguirus species is capable of moving both in water and on land, shown by Anguirus IV swimming through the ocean to escape Godzilla.

Weaknesses

Anguirus I was killed alongside Rodan I by the Chinese bioweapon, Hedorah. Anguirus IV was later killed alongside Baragon II and Varan II by a blast of atomic breath from Godzilla that obliterated all three monsters and the city of Los Angeles.

Books

GODZILLA: Monster Apocalypse

The first Anguirus emerged from the frozen soil of Siberia in November of 2005 and traveled southeast to Beijing, where it joined Rodan. Both monsters were exterminated by the Chinese bioweapon Hedorah, but a second Anguirus, denoted "Anguirus II," emerged in South Africa the following year. A fourth Anguirus appeared from the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles alongside Baragon II and Varan II in 2030, and all three monsters were killed by Godzilla.
