Mongo is a retroactively-evolved dinosaur-like creature who debuted in the fourth issue of The Kong Crew by Eric Herenguel in 2022. He was blinded and enslaved by a group of humans calling themselves “The Amazons.”
Origins
Mongo is a "retro-evolved" dinosaur, descended from Manhattan fauna that was infected by parasites brought to the country by King Kong, which caused the phenomenon. Much of Mongo’s history remains a mystery. It is not known what exactly he is, the circumstances of his capture by the Amazons, or how long he had been kept by them at the time of his death. A comment from Damara suggests that he may be only one in a line of creatures to bear the title of “Mongo,” but given the immediate destruction of the island after his death, it would appear that if this is the case, he would be the last of the line.
History
The Kong Crew
"Teeth Avenue"
When Virgil Price and Kurt Conrad were thrown into the Amazons' arena outside of Central Park, the Amazon Queen Damara was impressed when Price used the knife to cut the rope tying the men together instead of taking Kurt's life. Not to be outdone, she ordered the release of Mongo. He charged into the arena, throwing automobiles aside as he ran toward the men. Kurt became trapped under one of the cars, and Mongo prepared to strike, but Virgil tipped one car from on top of a pile onto Mongo's head. Believing him to be out for the count, Virgil ran to Kurt's aid, and Mongo threw the car off and reared up at them. Damara then leaped into the arena and slashed Mongo with her sword, which barely fazed the beast. He knocked the queen to the ground, and her gorilla bodyguard came down from above to defend her. She gave the order to kill the monster, and the gorilla let loose many rounds into Mongo's snout and flank. She made a brief challenge to her followers to see if anyone disapproved of her actions, and when they all were silent, she ordered them to find her "a new Mongo."
Abilities
Hearing
In light of his blinding, Mongo relies mainly on his sense of hearing, which allowed him to survive many encounters in the arena.
Weaknesses
Mongo was blinded by his captors.
Mongo was finally killed by at least thirteen high-powered rifle rounds.
